Study Day, Audley End

Saffron Walden, Essex, CB11 4JF | 10.30am - 3.30pm

Audley End, one of England’s grandest Jacobean houses, preserves an exceptional collection of more than 25,000 objects. During this visit, members will be able to explore a selection of these remarkable holdings, including two highlights that illuminate the richness and range of the estate’s artistic and decorative history:

  • A pair of mid-18th century mahogany bombé commodes, combining elaborate gilt-bronze mounts with an unusually complex construction. Attributions vary widely - German, Dresden, an émigré London craftsman, or a maker linked to Langlois or James Cullen. Their refinement and idiosyncrasy exemplify ambitious rococo furniture of the 1760s.
  • Sir Peter Lely's portrait of himself with architect Hugh May: a rare image of two of Charles II's leading artistic figures, painted as they helped reshape Windsor Castle after the Restoration. With Grinling Gibbons represented in sculpted form beside them, the work celebrates a circle of collaborators central to the revived monarchy's artistic identity.

Both of these objects are among 108 items gifted to the nation for permanent display at Audley End through the Acceptance in Lieu scheme in 2018. Our visit will include a tour of the house and a visit to the stores, accompanied by curator Peter Moore, conservator Sally Johnson and curatorial volunteer Tim Turner.

Audley End is a short distance from Audley End train station which is served by regular trains from London Liverpool Street. The visit will include a buffet lunch and will conclude with tea in the Audley End Estate Office.
