Country House Collections Digital Research Projects

Please join us on Zoom at 18.00 (GMT) for a workshop about two research projects, one focused on the Long Gallery at Castle Howard and the other concerned with the Octagon Room at Raby Castle.

Last summer, four post-graduate students engaged with archival material to present information digitally about an aspect of the furniture and furnishing of these two magnificent spaces. This venture is particularly exciting as each project brings together a student in Britain to work in collaboration with a student in the United States.

Benjamin Elliot, formerly at the University of York, worked with Heath Ballowe, at the Bard Graduate Centre, to investigate the Long Gallery at Castle Howard. They were generously supported by curator Eleanor Brooke-Peat. Ben and Heath focussed on the 1811 designs by Tatham and created a series of blogs which chronicled their research and shared their discoveries. Please click here to view an article about their experience on the BIFMO website.

Andrea Gonzalez, at the University of Leeds, and Cara Caputo, at Winterthur, looked at the Octagon Room at Raby Castle. Their collaboration was generously supported by curator, Julie Biddlecombe-Brown. Andrea and Cara presented their discoveries with an interactive visualisation of the contents of the room which can be viewed here on the Raby Castle website.

Join us on Zoom at 6pm on Tuesday, 8 February when the post-graduate students together with the projects’ curators share their research and their experiences of working on these projects while collaborating with a study partner thousands of miles away.

If you would like to attend, please email: bifmo@furniturehistorysociety.org.  FHS members have already been sent a Zoom link for this event.

These digital research projects and this event is generously funded by a grant from the Foyle Foundation.
