STUDY DAY AT BURTON CONSTABLE HALL

STUDY DAY AT BURTON CONSTABLE HALL, EAST YORKSHIRE, HU11 4LN

Monday, 20th March 2017

11am - 4.30pm (approx.)

--

This day visit will be a final opportunity to visit this fascinating house with its curator, Dr David Connell, whose knowledge and vision has guided the house’s development since it was transferred to a charitable trust.  Burton Constable is wonderfully varied, retaining its complete kit of furnishings, including the Great Drawing Room, which was furnished by Chippendale in the 1770s and the fabulous Chinese Room that was inspired by the Brighton Pavilion.  A highlight of the visit will be the just-completed Carved Room restoration project – an early eighteenth century cabinet of painted and gilded panelling painstakingly restored from pieces recovered from outbuildings, following twenty years of research.  Apart from these wonderful set pieces, Burton Constable contains rich holdings of the ephemera of a country house – carpets and wallpapers, the contents of linen cupboards, and finger-plates in bright and jolly papier-mâché.  There is still much to be learned about Burton Constable’s collection, and opinions and suggestions from FHS members will be most welcome.

Cost:  £60 including tea/coffee and lunch

Limit:  20 members
